To me, Fremantle is a great big playground. People flock to beaches like Leighton or dog-friendly South Fremantle, they get sloshed in local breweries like Little Creatures and Mad Monk or stuff themselves silly in the city’s restaurants like my new favourite – Chinese restaurant Joy Kitchen.

I must have timed my arrival to Perth perfectly because I’ve been living here 4 months and it’s rained twice. The entire summer has seen a [...]  I’ll admit I’m not crazy about Perth’s CBD. Too many soulless skyscrapers and take-away joints. Not nearly enough memorable architecture, parks, street art or fountains. The CBD seems to be completely focused on work, not play. Perhaps that explains why it empties to a ghost town after [...]  New findings indicate that independent bookstores are closing at a rate of 3 per week. And it’s no wonder. The challenges facing independent bookstores are great: chain bookstores like Borders, Barnes & Noble and Dymocks carry huge selections of books, often marked at discount prices; internet shopping giant Amazon’s ingenious recommendation system, combined with cheap [...]  As a Seattleite, I was born drinking coffee and find it completely normal for a city to have at least a dozen coffee shops/stands/drive-throughs on any given block. Every supermarket, bookstore and office building has its own café and every citizen a coffee in hand. In Seattle, Starbucks is laaame (because no self-respecting coffee-lover drinks [...]  Sunday Sessions are to Perthites what hooded rain jackets are to Seattleites: absolutely essential for survival. Friends come together on lazy Sunday afternoons to eat, drink and will the weekend to never end. Beach, bar or backyard – it makes no difference. But yesterday we might have found Perth’s best Sunday Session locale at Fremantle [...]  Last Saturday, in desperate need of a break from house-hunting in 38 degree heat, we stumbled across 9 Seeds, a cute café/juice bar/restaurant. It’s located on Marmion St in East Fremantle, just between Coode St and Wilkinson St. A tiny island in a suburban sea, 9 Seeds appears to enjoy a steady stream of business [...] |
