Every Saturday I’m faced with a dilemma: spend the morning doing the things I want to do (read the newspaper, drink coffee, eat pastries) or catch up on what I should do (go grocery shopping)? Luckily I’ve found a way to satisfy my inner glutton while whittling down the to-do list – the Mt Claremont Farmers’ Market.
Hosted each Saturday morning by Mt Claremont Primary School from 7:30 – 11:30, the market comprises 40 stalls selling fresh, seasonal organic products made by local WA farmers, food producers and chefs. “If it is on stall here, the stallholders grew it, caught it, raised it or made it themselves,” says The Food Lovers’ Guide to Perth, praising the market’s high-quality, yet affordable, products.
Started in 2007 by the Mt Claremont Primary School Parents and Citizens Association, the market’s philosophy is:
…To provide consumers with fresh, local and seasonal produce direct from producers. The market will bring together the grower and consumer offering a more direct “paddock-to-plate‟ process than otherwise available from commercial retailers.
This “paddock-to-plate” mantra means apples won’t come with a sticker and carrots will still have soil clinging to their roots. What a nice surprise. The honey is sold by the beekeeper herself. You can pick up culinary secrets from the Italian nonna whose gnocchi you buy (she’s lovely and they’re delicious!). The most difficult decision of the morning will be deciding between a croissant and a brioche at La Galette de France’s stall. With the shopping done, now’s the time to find a table, open your newspaper, drink your take-away coffee and bask in the community atmosphere of the market.
But the best part? Knowing I’ll never spend another Saturday morning at Coles in a shopping cart traffic jam.
