Sunday Sessions at Fremantle ArtsCentre

Sunday Sessions are to Perthites what hooded rain jackets are to Seattleites: absolutely essential for survival. Friends come together on lazy Sunday afternoons to eat, drink and will the weekend to never end. Beach, bar or backyard – it makes no difference. But yesterday we might have found Perth’s best Sunday Session locale at Fremantle ArtsCentre.

From October to March, FAC hosts Courtyard Music, a free live music event held every Sunday from 2-4pm. People gather on plastic chairs and blankets to enjoy the music, the shade-strewn grass and the breeze flittering amongst the leaves overhead. Picnics and BYO drinks are welcomed, but a stocked bar and cafe are ready to refill depleted supplies. The cafe, serving Map Coffee, has a surprisingly varied menu and delicious baked goods – especially the savoury muffin.

Yesterday’s Courtyard Music group was Scope, playing “dynamic original jazz with an infectious Latin-American, African, world and classical feel.” Take a listen below:

For those who can’t sit still for two hours, there are lots of corners to explore at Fremantle ArtsCentre:

  • Found – The self-described “best little shop in town” isn’t far off the mark. This place is packed with products made exclusively by Western Australian artists including jewellery, homewares, toys, books, cards and clothes. It’s the perfect place to find a unique gift and support local artists.
